SOWETO, JOHANNESBURG — A 24 year old woman, Janet Mokoena, has reportedly threatened to have her boyfriend arrested after he broke up with her for cheating — insisting his heartbreak was an act of ingratitude and possibly illegal.
“I was expecting a proposal, not a breakup,” Janet said in a viral video.
“I cheated because I love him. He was broke, and I needed someone rich to stabilise us emotionally. That’s what real girlfriends do.”
She added, “It’s been going on for two years, but my heart has always been his. How could he cheat on me emotionally by not forgiving my cheating?”Friends say Janet took the breakup as a personal attack on her mental stability—and quickly decided the only logical next step was to destroy his life, romantically and legally. “If he won’t marry me, maybe some prison time will make him appreciate true love,” she reportedly said. “I’m the only one who can love him this dangerously.”
Relationship expert Dr. Thabiso Molefe, from the University of Johannesburg, commented on the case, calling it “an Olympic-level somersault of entitlement.”
“In today’s dating climate, we’re witnessing what I call ‘Romantic Reverse Victim-hood Syndrome‘ — where someone cheats, gets caught, and then claims emotional damages. It’s a disturbing evolution in psychological jiu-jitsu,” he explained.
Analysts say the case resembles a 2023 scandal in Kenya, where a woman sued her ex for emotional trauma after he failed to marry her despite her cheating “only occasionally.”
Social commentators suggest Janet’s reaction highlights a growing trend among lovers who mistake criminal prosecution for romantic commitment.
The boyfriend, now reportedly staying with relatives in Mpumalanga, told reporters, “She should go love her father that way. He deserves that kind of crazy love more than I do. Goodbye—and good riddance to emotionally weaponized insanity.”
