DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA — Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has announced he won’t seek re-election, saying it’s time someone else experienced the joy of being blamed for everything.
Majaliwa, who has held power since 2015, says he’s exhausted from getting blamed for everything, unprovoked and free of charge. “It’s time someone else shares that joy,” he added.
“I get blamed for everything… from the rain not falling properly to people getting kidnapped, like I’m the one doing it,” Majaliwa said during a press briefing. “Have you seen those ugly memes about me? You wouldn’t believe how much Tanzanians mock the one person who truly has their back.”
He added, “To my successor: I wish you all the scapegoat memes and internet trolling that comes with the job. Good luck.”
Political analysts remain puzzled. “A whole Prime Minister stepping down just because of a few memes?” said Yusuf Hassan, a political commentator. “I think he’s just a coward. A few memes don’t mean you should step down from a post that’s wholly and rightfully made for only you. The next PM should be able to laugh at viral mockery. That’s leadership.”
In unrelated news, Tanzania’s next Prime Minister has reportedly started therapy to avoid crying himself to sleep over memes. All for the sake of public service.
